Kingsley Public Library

Computer and Technology Use Policy

For all patrons

It is the mission of the Kingsley Public Library to build up a digitally literate community of lifelong learners.  To pursue this mission, the KPL provides current technologies such as public access computers, hardwired and wireless internet access, online research databases, computer applications and printing.

The KPL supports the right to privacy and confidentiality (Iowa Code Chapter 22.7) of its patrons and maintains no records of what patrons view.

Access to the Internet is available to all patrons; however, unacceptable use of this service will result in the suspension or revocation of all Internet use privileges.  KPL patrons should be aware that inappropriate use of electronic information resources can be a violation of local, state and federal laws and can lead to prosecution. The user will be held responsible for his/her actions using the internet.

·      Parents or legal guardians of children under 18 must assume responsibility for their children’s use of the Library’s internet service.  Children eight years old or younger must be in the immediate presence of a parent or other responsible caregiver over the age of 12. Parents are advised to supervise their children’s activities.

·      KPL provides 30-minute sessions at all workstations on a first come, first served basis. Additional time may be granted, unless others are waiting.  There is a limit of 2 hours per day per patron at the computer workstations.  Exceptions may only be made by library personnel for patrons who request additional time to perform research or test as deemed appropriate.

·      Pages printed from all printers will cost the patron $.10 per page for black copies and $.25 for color copies.

·      The computers are to be turned off 5 minutes before closing time of the library so patrons should have all tasks completed by that time.

·      Patrons are expected to have basic computer knowledge when using the KPL’s computers and internet.  Library staff members will answer questions as time allows.  Patrons are welcome to ask staff about scheduling a personal training session with a staff member.

·      No food or drink are allowed in the computer area.

·      Patrons will monitor their behavior, sound levels, voices and chatter in order to be respectful and not interfere with the quiet use of the library by others.

The KPL makes no guarantee with respect to the quality or content of the information available on the internet.  Not all information on the internet is accurate, current or complete.  Therefore, users are encouraged to evaluate the validity of information accessed.
